Know Your Self via 4 Elements
[1.19.25] ‘I wish I can have a drink,’ we sat in front of a shaking and stirring, tattooed bartender. The atmosphere was fun and slightly frantic. The restaurant announced its closure a week ago, and people packed the place.
The thought of having a drink was me being festive. I’m allergic to alcohol. My hubby quipped, ‘alcohol makes people less inhibited. You’re already that without it.’
He knows me well. 😀
Blessed with plenty of fire, I have an expansive sense of jolly, a thirst for truth and meaning. Positivity, passion, expressiveness, and action are fire qualities. Warm and courageous, it is of yang polarity.
Astropsychology is useful for understanding oneself and access the energies within. You don’t need to know your birth chart to consider your 4 elements; in fact, don’t look it up — reflect on your own first.
In addition to Fire, the other 3 elements:
- Air (yang): thinking, communicating, learning, writing, relating, social connections, mindset, innovation. Objective and detached.
- Earth (yin/receptive): practicality, ambition, commitment, organization, harvest, senses, possessions, steadfastness. Tangible and resourceful.
- Water (yin): nurture, emotional sensitivity, feelings, intuition, memories, blending of boundaries. Compassionate and receiving.
Polarities:
- Yang: active and assertive —> puts out energy.
- Yin: sensing and receptive —> absorbs energy.
Sometimes we are attracted to people who resonate with us, or those who can express the elements within us. And sometimes, we are drawn to folks whose makeup completes ours. A bit lacking in air, I have close friends who are objective, analytical thinkers.
When I was much younger, I loved assertive, daring people (fire) who tended to be rule-breakers — they expressed a repressed child self who was raised to obey and produce (earth). During my healing experience, I honed my fire, cultivated my inner listener and intuition (water). Now trained as a coach, I immerse in perspectives (air).
We all encounter challenges that invite evolution, calling upon our less-oft-used elements. Remember that we have different quotients of the elements, sometimes an element is missing, lacking, or overly abundant. They can be blindspots.
5 Questions to discern your elemental essence:
- Consider the descriptions of the elements above, and give each a number from 1-5 that represents your observation of yourself (5 = ‘totally this element’). What are your top 1 and 2 elements?
- Reflect upon your past successes: What elements were expressed, and how did they contribute to your peak moments?
- What qualities do you appreciate about yourself? When you work or help others, what element is often used? What element do your loved ones cherish the most about you?
- Think about your role models, social and professional circles, what elements do you admire about them?
- Going forward, what elements do you need to invoke, or want more of, to help you realize your next goal? How can you awaken that aspect of yourself?
