Know Our True Voice: Lessons from Silence
Have you ever said to yourself: I’ll clean up my act when I reach a goal? Or, once I get there, I can relax? While doing this short term might work, I learned that it’s not sustainable.
I had the opportunity to be very quiet and sit with myself for days. A bad cold rendered me voiceless – boy, it was hard for an extrovert. I stopped posting videos on Instagram, making workshops, and slowed to a halt. Battling germs took energy, and I had nothing to say. Like my voice, my ideas evaporated into the summer heat.
In silence with a heavy head, I tried to gain some perspective. What happened? Stress and fatigue induced carb-binging and intermittent fasting that started and ended too late in the day. I didn’t sleep well because I went to bed with a full stomach. In my mind, after we finish the house buying marathon, I’d straighten out the bad habits. The months-long search has been epic. The dramas are piling up, enough material for another memoir.
Home is a dear, elusive topic for my inner child. I had poured a ton of energy into its search and evaluation, full of hope and intentions. Meanwhile, my other plans, like a sandcastle on the beach, got eroded by the tides of distraction. I lost sight what I had intended to do this year.
Life can be like that, we let our unhealed parts of ourselves take over our voice.
This no appetite, no voice time distilled what is pure for me. The noise about a home fell away. Clarity emerged as I mended. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Suddenly, there is no need to inhale carbs. I eat during the day and sleep with a peaceful belly. The extra layer of fat came off.
I had a reset.
Here is what I learned:
- Being voiceless for a period, like a silent retreat, helps us discern our true feelings.
- Inner purification gives us a grounded voice.
- I cherish using my voice to spread positivity. Back to Instagram I go.
- Having a clear voice is essential to our being.
- We have many roles in life, as family, parents, children, workers, leaders, teachers, and healers. Our voice advocates and contributes to the world.
On July 22, the sun moves into the self-validating, regal, and expressive Leo. Mercury, the planet of communication, is already there. The energy now supports speaking and expressing our unabashed self. Gift yourself the time and silence to discern your voice – don’t wait until some spiritual-stopping incident or illness.
Questions to consider:
- Are you on a path to express your true self?
- What would you do if you must be silent for 10 days?
- What can you do to purify your intention and voice?
- How would you like to use your voice to contribute to the world?
- What is preventing you from speaking up?
